Photographing Melbourne

The city I grew up in.

Melbourne is where I learned to photograph weddings, and where most of my work still happens. From a registry ceremony at the State Building to a backyard celebration in the inner north, the city's strength is its variation: terrace houses, warehouse venues, riverside parks, and the kind of laneway light photographers rave about for a reason.

I've shot at Glasshaus in Richmond, the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton, and through Parliament Gardens between ceremony and reception. The trick with a Melbourne wedding is timing: traffic, weather, and the city's habit of giving you four seasons in an afternoon all matter. I plan portrait windows tight enough that a sudden change of plan never costs you the photographs that matter.

For couples in apartments and small inner-city homes, getting-ready photographs come down to finding a clean window of light, not a styled space. That's something I've done hundreds of times. You don't need a perfect Pinterest room. You need a photographer who knows how to make any room look like one.

Local venues I know

A few Melbourne venues I've worked at or know well.

Not exhaustive, just the ones I'm most often asked about. If your venue isn't on this list, send it through; I've likely shot there or at least scouted it.

  • Royal Exhibition Building heritage / grand
  • Melbourne Registry & Parliament Gardens civil / city
  • Glasshaus, Richmond glasshouse / inner-east
  • The Henley Club, Melbourne mansion / boutique
  • Pumphouse, Carlton industrial / loft
  • St Kilda Botanical Gardens gardens / portrait spot
  • The Tea Room, QVWC historic / formal

My approach

Quietly, candidly, almost invisibly.

I direct only when a portrait genuinely needs it, and I keep group photos efficient so you can get back to your guests. The rest of the day is documentary. I'm not the loudest person in the room and I won't ever ask you to "do that again for the camera." If you want photographs that feel like the day actually felt, that's the brief.

Local FAQ

Melbourne questions, answered.

Do you charge a travel fee for Melbourne weddings?

No. Travel within 90 minutes of central Melbourne is included in every collection, which covers the whole metro area from Werribee out to Lilydale and down to Frankston.

Which Melbourne venues have you photographed at?

A range across the city: Glasshaus in Richmond, the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Registry and Parliament House, plus garden ceremonies and inner-suburb backyards. I'm comfortable with laneway portraits, warehouse spaces, and traditional ballrooms.

What's the best season for a Melbourne wedding?

Spring (October to mid-November) and autumn (March to early May) give you the most reliable light and temperature. Summer is gorgeous but hot, so I'll plan portrait timing carefully. Winter weddings indoors look beautiful with the right venue.
