Vineyards over the bay, waterfront ceremonies, and the kind of coastal light that does most of the work. Documentary collections from AUD $1,200.

Photographing Geelong & the Bellarine

An hour west, but a different climate of light.

The Bellarine has quietly become one of the strongest wedding regions in the state. The vineyards along the ridge between Drysdale and Portarlington (Jack Rabbit, Terindah, Oakdene, Basils Farm) all sit on the same kind of view: rolling pasture sloping down to Port Phillip, with Melbourne's skyline visible across the water on clear days. It photographs beautifully because the sea breeze keeps the air clean and the light cool.

Geelong itself has shifted with its waterfront, and the heritage industrial buildings around the harbour have started to host weddings well. The You Yangs sit just to the north, giving you a granite backdrop most photographers in the state can't easily access. Couples who want both vineyard portraits and something more raw and elemental can usually get both inside an hour's drive.

Coming from Melbourne, the West Gate gives you a clear hour to Geelong on most weekends, longer if you're heading right out to Queenscliff or Barwon Heads. I plan getting-ready timing carefully so we never feel rushed, and I always have a wet-weather portrait spot in mind, because the Bellarine catches its own micro-storms.

Local venues I know

Geelong & Bellarine venues I'm comfortable in.

A short list of the venues I get asked about most, plus a couple I've scouted personally. If your venue isn't here, send it through; the Bellarine is small enough that I likely know the layout.

  • Jack Rabbit Vineyard, Bellarine winery / bay views
  • Oakdene Vineyards, Wallington winery / sculpture
  • Provenance Wines, Geelong urban winery / heritage
  • Spray Farm, Bellarine historic homestead
  • Terindah Estate, Bellarine winery / clifftop
  • Basils Farm, Swan Bay farm / coastal
  • The Pier, Geelong waterfront / formal

Recent Victorian work.

I'm regularly across the West Gate, but my published galleries currently sit closer to Werribee and the inner suburbs. A short selection of recent days that share the same approach.

My approach

Quietly observed, gently directed.

Most of the day I move with you, not at you. When portraits matter (after the ceremony, again at golden hour) I'll guide just enough to make the photographs feel like the day they came from, not a separate event you had to perform for.

Local FAQ

Geelong & Bellarine questions, answered.

Do you travel to Geelong from Melbourne?

Often, and travel inside the 90-minute window from Melbourne is included. Geelong sits comfortably inside that, as does most of the Bellarine. For weddings further along the Surf Coast (Lorne, Apollo Bay) I'll quote a small travel allowance upfront.

Which Bellarine and Geelong venues have you photographed at?

The Bellarine has some of the strongest wedding venues in the state: Jack Rabbit Vineyard, Terindah Estate, Oakdene, and Basils Farm all give you sweeping views of the bay. Closer to Geelong itself, waterfront ceremonies and heritage warehouse spaces are increasingly popular and I've worked in both.

Best season for a Geelong or Bellarine wedding?

Summer through autumn (December to April) for the long evenings and reliable warmth. The Bellarine catches a steady sea breeze that takes the edge off summer heat, which is part of why the region works so well for outdoor ceremonies. Spring is also lovely if you can take a Saturday in late October or early November.
