Wedding photography
in Victoria's High Country.

Mountain weddings, alpine elopements, and the kind of long valley light Melbourne photographers don't see often enough. From AUD $1,200.

Photographing the High Country

Three hours from the city, a different country entirely.

The Victorian High Country is the part of the state most Melbourne photographers don't drive to. It takes effort to get to, and the venues are more spread out than the wine regions closer to town. That distance is part of what makes a High Country wedding feel different. You commit to the place, your guests commit with you, and the photographs reflect a day that wasn't built around convenience.

Around Merrijig and Mansfield, the country opens out into long valley views with Mt Buller as a constant horizon line. Playshack near Buller is the kind of venue I love: rough enough to feel real, polished enough to host a wedding well, and with the sort of late-afternoon mountain light that makes portrait timing easy. Further north toward Bright, Beechworth, and the King Valley, the country shifts into deciduous forest, vineyards along narrow valley floors, and town-square weddings with a softer pace.

Logistically, the High Country needs a little more planning than a venue an hour from town. I drive up the day before so morning getting-ready coverage starts fresh, and I'll always factor in alpine weather, road conditions, and the way light behaves at altitude. None of that is overhead for you to worry about, but it's part of why mountain weddings benefit from a photographer who's done them before.

My approach

Quiet, prepared, comfortable in the cold.

Mountain weddings reward photographers who plan. I scout venue light before the day, watch the alpine forecast, and pack for whatever weather might turn up. On the day itself I'm a documentary observer, directing only when a portrait needs it. The country does most of the photographic work; my job is to stay out of the way of it.

Local FAQ

High Country questions, answered.

How far is the High Country from Melbourne, and how do you handle travel?

Merrijig and Mansfield are about three hours from Melbourne; Bright and Beechworth closer to four. I always drive up the day before for High Country weddings so getting-ready coverage starts unhurried. There's a small overnight allowance to cover accommodation, which I'll quote upfront so it's never a surprise.

Have you photographed at Playshack or other Merrijig venues?

Yes. Chloe and Nathan's wedding at Playshack near Mt Buller is one of my favourites: the venue's loose, mountain-feel character, the long valley light, and a small tight guest list all worked together. I'm comfortable across the Merrijig and Mansfield area generally, and happy to chat through Mt Buller weddings, alpine elopements, or country properties through the King Valley.

What's the best season for a High Country wedding?

It depends entirely on what you want. Late spring through autumn (November to early May) gives you the warm, long-evening alpine days most couples picture. Mid to late autumn turns the deciduous trees through Bright and Beechworth into something cinematic. A small number of couples book mid-winter for snow weddings on Buller, which photograph beautifully but need extra logistical planning. I'm happy to walk through any of these.

Do the mountains add coverage limits or extra costs?

Not really. My standard collections cover the wedding day fully. The only High Country specific add-on is the overnight allowance for travel, which is small and quoted upfront. If you're planning an elopement or a smaller mid-week wedding I can put together a tighter half-day option too.
