Lush green hills, working farms, west Gippsland wineries, and the kind of country light Melbourne photographers don't get often enough. From AUD $1,200.

Photographing Gippsland

Country I love quietly returning to.

Gippsland has a reputation among photographers for being the part of Victoria that stays green when the rest of the state has burned off. Drive an hour east of Pakenham and you're in dairy country, with rolling hills, dark cypresses on the ridgelines, and a softer, wetter light than Melbourne ever gets. It rewards photographers who slow down.

Maria and Joel's wedding at Parnassus Drouin is one I still return to often: the venue's grounds, the way the gardens drop away to a paddock backdrop, and the easy mood of a Gippsland Saturday all photographed beautifully. The wedding ended up in the pages of I Do Gippsland magazine, which felt deserved. Beyond Parnassus, west Gippsland has steadily added good wedding venues: hilltop estates around Warragul, farm weddings through Yarragon and Trafalgar, and a small but growing winery scene in the Strzelecki foothills.

Logistically, west Gippsland is comfortable from Melbourne. Drouin is about ninety minutes door to door on a good run, and Warragul a touch further. For weddings further east, toward South Gippsland and Wilsons Promontory country, I usually drive up the night before so getting-ready coverage starts unhurried.

My approach

Quiet, patient, country-paced.

Country weddings reward photographers who don't rush. I move at the pace of the day, watch carefully, and direct only when a portrait genuinely calls for it. There's a different rhythm to a regional wedding and I lean into it rather than fighting it.

Local FAQ

Gippsland questions, answered.

Do you travel to Gippsland for weddings?

Yes, often. Maria and Joel's wedding at Parnassus Drouin made the pages of I Do Gippsland magazine, and west Gippsland is a region I'm comfortable working in. I'll quote a small travel allowance for venues further east (toward Inverloch, Foster, or beyond) so there are no surprises.

Which Gippsland venues have you photographed at?

Parnassus Drouin is the venue I'm best known for in west Gippsland. Beyond that, the region's strength is its diversity: hilltop estates around Warragul, working farms through Yarragon and Trafalgar, and the wineries that are gradually establishing themselves in the foothills of the Strzeleckis.

What's the best season for a Gippsland wedding?

Late spring through mid-autumn (November to early May) is the photographer's pick. The west Gippsland hills hold their green well into summer, which is rare for Victoria, and autumn has a light through the dairy country that's hard to find elsewhere. Winter is workable indoors, but the country roads can be wet.
