Wedding photography
on the Mornington Peninsula.

Photographing the Peninsula

Two coasts, one quietly perfect region.

The Mornington Peninsula is two regions in one. The bay side, from Mornington down through Mount Martha and Rye, gives you sheltered beaches and the soft, even light that makes coastal portraits feel effortless. The back beaches, around Cape Schanck and Flinders, are wilder, with cliff edges, rougher water, and a kind of romance that suits couples who want something less polished.

Inland, the Red Hill hinterland is a different world: vineyards, olive groves, and rural estates folded into rolling countryside. Polperro and Pt Leo Estate sit in this hinterland zone and both photograph beautifully through golden hour. Quest Farm in Bittern feels like a working farm because it is one, which I love. There's authenticity in venues that aren't built solely for weddings.

For the day itself, the Peninsula's biggest gift is wind direction. I always check the forecast a week out and plan portrait locations accordingly, because the difference between a sheltered cove and an exposed cliff can be the difference between calm hair and a hurricane in your photographs. Local knowledge matters here, and I've shot enough Peninsula weddings to know which spots forgive what kind of weather.

Local venues I know

Peninsula venues I've worked at or scouted.

A short, honest list. The Peninsula has more good wedding venues than this; these are the ones I'm most often asked about and most comfortable directing portraits inside.

  • Polperro Vineyard, Red Hill winery / hinterland
  • Pt Leo Estate sculpture park / vineyard
  • Montalto, Red Hill South winery / olive grove
  • Baie Wines cellar door / coastal
  • Lindenderry, Red Hill estate / gardens
  • Quest Farm, Bittern farm / barn
  • Red Hill Estate winery / classic

My approach

Documentary, calm, and ready for the weather.

Most of the day I'll be a quiet observer. When portraits are needed I'll direct lightly, then disappear again. Coastal weddings reward photographers who pay attention to small light shifts, and I'll keep watch on the sky so we don't miss a five-minute window of beautiful gold over the bay.

Local FAQ

Peninsula questions, answered.

Is travel to the Peninsula included?

Yes. Travel within 90 minutes of Melbourne is included, which covers everything from Mount Eliza out to Flinders. For elopements south of Cape Schanck I sometimes add a small fuel and time allowance, which I'll quote upfront.

Which Peninsula venues have you worked at?

A mix across the region: private estates in the hinterland, beachside ceremonies between Mount Martha and Mornington, and dinners at vineyards through Red Hill. Polperro, Pt Leo Estate, and Quest Farm are all venues I'm comfortable working in if you're considering them.

What's the best time of year for a Peninsula wedding?

Late summer through autumn (February to early May) is the photographer's pick. The light is long, the heat has eased, and the coastal breeze is gentler. Spring works well too, though October weather is unpredictable. Winter weddings indoors at the wineries can be deeply atmospheric.
